The Passion of Backyard Wrestling

Backyard wrestling has become commonplace in our society today. Adolescents imitate that which they see on TV. Popular shows include WWE's RAW, Smackdown, and ECW; along with TNA Impact. These are just two of the many wrestling promotions in our nation. These are trained professionals, all with years of experience and conditioning. So is it really wise for these children to be attempting to reenact what they do? It might be risky, but without backyard wrestling, professional wrestling as we know it today would not be the same.

One of the most prominent example would be the Hardy siblings, Matt and Jeff, along with regular associates such as Gregory Helms and Shannon Moore. All of them have risen to great heights in professional wrestling, though unfortunately the latter half of the four have been released from WWE, the latter still having been released just a week ago.

These four superstars, while wrestling together as children, went to great lengths to imitate their favorite wrestlers. They built ring posts and used garden hoses as ropes, to construct a makeshift ring using their trampoline as the foundation. The eventual superstars came up with elaborate gimmicks and personas, which they displayed in the ring. They even came up with live shows that they performed in front of friends and family, under the federation name, “TWF” or Trampoline/Teen Wrestling Federation. They'd all eventually go on to begin the East Coast Wrestling Federation, and then the Organization of Modern Extreme Grappling Arts (OMEGA) with Matt Hardy as their primary promoter.

Children with big dreams eventually ascended to the level of world class entertainers. Each of the original four have had successful stints in WWE, the crown jewel in professional wrestling. Though none of them showed as much success as the Hardy Boys.

Despite the risks that these upcoming wrestlers took on throughout their backyard wrestling days, they still held onto the dream that they could one day step into the ring with those they idolized when they were still lugging backpacks onto a big yellow bus every morning. It was a long shot, but they took it, and they hit right on the mark. But what is the limit for backyard wrestling?

Some do not merely learn the trade of professional wrestling, and then take up the practice. Others ignore the difference between legitimate and staged, and delve right into purely legitimate wrestling. They'd use weapons without implementing them in a way that would only create the illusion of causing significant harm. Though world level wrestling federations in the past would also go to some extents, the fact these kids, who are still very untrained, would put their bodies through even more risk than your typical wrestling is nothing but foolish.

A lot of people say, however, that it is those who stick purely to wrestling -- and not a bunch of weapon-swinging -- are the most at risk. It is said -- and true to some extents -- that many kids do not know their strength, and so attempting moves seen in professional wrestling is highly dangerous, due to the potential falls they could suffer.

So why do they do it? Why do so many children take such great risks?

When asked to answer why he'd risks so much, “The Beast” Marcus Reyes, a member of Altitude Backyard Wrestling (a backyard wrestling promotion featured on YouTube), simply said, “It's something I've loved my entire life. It's not just fun -- it feels right.”

Whatever the reasons, the risks remain the same. Most backyard wrestlers do not have the training as other, more financially stable ones do. But they'll take the risks, all for that one emotion many cynics would deem a useless and unnecessary part of the human mind's spectrum of emotions: Passion.

The Five Coolest WWE Titles and What You Didn't Know About Them

The Intercontinental Championship has been held many times and Chris Jericho has held it a record of 8 separate occasions. This title has been around in Wwf. The title's creation came as a result of Patterson defeating Ted DiBiase to win the WWF North American Heavyweight Championship and defending the title in a tournament to be unified with a South American Heavyweight Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The title later became known as the WWF Intercontinental Championship.

The ECW World Heavyweight Championship was in the original ECW. Sabu won this title in a barbed wire match where he ripped his bicep open. This title has some violent history. This was the original ECW title and it was active until April 11, 2001 when ECW shut down and Wwe bought its Assets. It was revived in June 2006 when ECW became a third brand for Wwe.

The World Heavyweight championship has been held by people such as Batista Triple H and the legendary Ric Flair. The title was introduced in 2002 by Eric Bischoff because Raw had no World Title he handed it to Triple H because he was the last superstar to have the Wwe Undisputed championship which was currently held by Brock Lesnar

The Us Title has been held by many people such as MVP and Shelton Benjamin and this title has been around since Wwf. The title was originally called the WCW United states title but during SummerSlam 2001 Edge won the intercontinental title while he had the U.S Title causing it to be inactive. It was reactivated as the Wwe United States Championship by Stephanie McMahon on Smackdown.

The Wwe championship is the richest prize in this business and this title design was made by John Cena. The title was the first Title in the Wwf and it became the Wwe title after the name change. The title was unified after the Wcw Invasion

Outside Looking In

Been a way for a while , had to put my mother in the ground after some very heavy duty days with her in the hospital. She would want me to go on and pursue my dreams as a writer and sense this is the best shot I've ever had ,here goes nothing.

I was about 50/50 on my predictions for GAB and the week that followed didn't really further any of the story lines on any of the shows, id thought I'd point out a few flaws in their creative logic. By the way , I'm writing this as Cena is opening up tonight's Raw.

Right off the bat, the logic that says Ron Killings working dark matches and Wildcat Harris gets on to TV before Killings is just Stupid. First of all, changing Harris's name was wrong , the same demo that watch your product also watch the other guys . Harris is a known name and changing his name only puts him back at square one. By the same token Killings has been working dark matches since he signed with the WWE and has yet to make it to TV. They need good bodies at the mid card level and the “truth “ and his talent fits that bill. Raw update, Batista and Cena are going to go against Kane and JBL. Also the new GM is going to be announced tonight , I think it's going to be Regal.

On the subject of Kane, a long time member of the company who has done what the company has asked always, might be putting his mask back on. In theory it's a good idea, in reality do you want to push back one of your best workers two to three years.

They have taken a huge left turn in a tag match that was going to be the WWE champs VS Lawler and Jim Duggan. At the last minute it , they put Cole as the Kings partner and it didn't go that well. Once again they have proven their willingness to throw the tag team division under the bus.

In the land of extreme, Mark Henry's alliance with hall of fame wrestler Tony Atlas has proven a tough bound to break, especially since they got Collin Delaney to turn on Tommy Dreamer. Since there is no one else on the horizon that poses an immediate threat to Henry, I think that they will stretch the feud with Dreamer a while longer and it might come down to an Extreme rules match between the two.

And now we come to SMACKDOWN . Having not been a fan of the whole Vickie EDGE storyline , it took a wild turn last week with EDGE getting caught on tape groping the wedding planner Alicia Fox. This set Vicki off to the point that she reinstated the Undertaker and made a Hell in the Cell match between the two at Summer Slam. Khali won a battle Royal to become the Number one contender for the WWE belt and will face the “Game” at Summer Slam . This doesn't really fit the whole let's pump up SMACKDOWN Mantra since Khali has been lumbering around on bad knee's for a while.

So the four confirmed matches for Summer Slam are , Mark Henry V Matt Hardy for the ECW belt , Batista V John Cena, HHH V Khali for the WWE championship, and EDGE V the Undertaker in Hell in the cell. For one of their bigger PPV's of the year I have to say I'm a little disappointed . And speaking of being disappointed, the new GM was just named at the end of RAW and he made the Batista Cena match. One has to wonder what the hell NBC exc Dick Ebersole has on Vince because the new GM for RAW none other then Mike Adamlie. Yes the man that doesn't know the an Oklahoma roll from tuna roll is now in charge of RAW. Heaven help us all. More to come later this week.

On Second Thought, Vince McMahon Was Right in Sending Jim Ross From Raw to Smackdown

"It's a very, very bad idea to send Jim Ross from Raw to Smackdown. Or so I thought at first. I was thinking the boss, the chairman of WWE(World Wrestling Entertainment)was an idiot for doing so. And it's very rarely I consider Mr. McMahon an "idiot."

I've always thought of Vince McMahon as a very smart businessman who knows how to make money and what's best for the viewer, often wishing I had his success and mostly the kind of moeny he has. He's a billionaire after all. But how is sending Jim Ross(or J.R.)good for viewers? Or for the WWE for that matter? Some people such as myself tune into WWE, yes for some of the wrestling matches but mostly I love to hear what Jim Ross and Jerry(The King)Lawler are going to say during the broadcast.

By getting rid of J.R. from Raw would mean losing viewers who will not tune into Raw again. Watch Smackdown instead? "You've gotta be kidding me" I screamed! "I could care less about Smackdown" and without both J.R. and The King side-by-side broadcasting why bother? I never could get into Smackdown, with the rare time when one of my favourite WWE Divas Ashley Massaro was on, then I'd fast forward through all the matches just to see her in action.

I still tune into Raw and now alongside Jerry(The King)Lawler is Michael Cole. Cole's doing an excellent job as is Lawler so I don't mind continuing watching Raw. Surprising myself I still enjoy Raw. Sure takes some adjusting to the new announce team though. But any change is difficult at first and takes time to adjust.

Missing J.R.'s commentary I also watch Smackdown the entire 2 hours. With J.R. at the announce table is Mick Foley. And while I've always been a Mick Foley fan, I didn't think I'd enjoy Ross announcing alongside anyone else. I was wrong!

Damn Mr. McMahon! Why did you have to be right? People such as myself now watch Smackdown to hear Jim Ross. Wonder how many extra Smackdown viewers there are now as a result. Guess McMahon was right. Sending Jim Ross to Smackdown would help with the ratings since Smackdown was behind compared to Raw.

Obviously McMahon(or Vinnie Mac)does know what's best for the WWE and for the viewer. He in fact is a very smart man who does know what's best. Guess that means I was wrong and owe Vince McMahon an apology for thinking he's an "idiot."

The Hardy Boyz and Tag Team Wrestling

Last Tuesday on ECW, The Hardy Boyz made a brief resurrection of their once great tag team that was very popular and held the Tag Team Title numerous times. As you all know, the WWE has more or less gotten rid of the Tag Team division due to not pushing any duos and not hyping up any tag matches.

Now I'm thinking that if the WWE wants to make the Tag Team Division a more popular area, bringing back the Hardys wouldn't be such a bad idea. People still love both Matt and Jeff Hardy, and if they were to make a rivalry with The Miz and Morrison and have them win the title, then it would start to get peoples attention onto the Tag Team scene. Maybe also bring back some tag teams like The Undertaker and Kane, or maybe even bring The Big Show back into tag team action, since he's not doing much on Smackdown currently, and I just don't see a fued with him and the Champ (CM Punk) due to their majorly differnet styles.

Also The Big Show's popularity has been down as of late, mostly because he took his break when he was pretty popular and he's somewhat of a heel now. Anyways, if the WWE were to get tag matches like The Hardy Boyz vs. Paul London and Brian Kendrick then that would be an amazing match to watch. Maybe they could get some Jesse & Festus vs. Kane and The Undertaker.

I think bringing up some vintage Tag Teams would be a good move for the WWE. Also get some new ones going. Maybe a good team would be Evan Bourne and Super Crazy now that they're both on ECW, maybe Shelton Benjamin and Elijah Burke, or even Santino Marella and Nunzio with maybe some wrestling but a little comedy with it.

All and all I think it would be a great idea for the WWE to bring tag team wrestling back into it's primitive form, and to allow it to be as popular as it has been in years past.

Squared Circle Blog 7-9-08

Week two of the new and improve WWE and I cant wait for tonight's RAW. Last week the opening twenty five minutes was some of the best that they have done in a long time. Overall the RAW show was above average and I hope they can build on the momentum they started last week.

Right off the bat, I don't think that CM Punk's title reign is going to be very long but he has been given a golden opportunity to carve his niche among main event wrestlers for years to come . Despite backstage grumblings about his work ethic, it's clear that he gets over with the fans in a very big way. As long as he doesn't do anything stupid , his place is pretty much set.

Ron “the truth” Killings has been doing his fair share of Dark matches since they signed him months ago. The same can be said for former seven time tag champ Chris “Wildcat” Harris who is right now in FCW scrapping off the ring rust and dropping a few pounds before he gets to play with the big boys. There is the same story all over the net today that the both of them are do for a big push what ever the hell that entails.

The next thing I would like to discuss is that were in the hell is Beth Phoenix . I have said this on more then one occasion , if there is one area that TNA is cutting into the WWE dominance it's the female division. The knockouts in the ring are far better then the divas and given the fact that the newest knockout blew her leg out at an indy show I don't know why they aren't at least talking to Chyna with the whole awesome Kong challenge . But back to The Glamazon. She hasn't been seen since Melina got hurt. There has been no injury report and Mickie James has moved on to Katie Lea. One of the most impressive female wrestlers since Chyna has just vanished and I don't get it.

Glad to see that Cryme Tyme is getting some air time also. With the whole second generation thing going on with the tag belts they are going to need credible foes to go after and the shape of tag team division, Cyrme Tyme is all they really have.

Another interesting twist to the new and improved WWE is the fact that Steven Regal's suspension is all but over and begs the question what do you do with him. I know that he comes with bus loads of baggage but the fact is your short good heals on raw and you need a guy like him move the story along whatever the story may be.

As far as the injury report goes , Kofi Kingston suffered an eye injury in a non title match with Charlie Haas . Nothing has been reported as to how bad it is. And CM Punk broke Snitsky's nose with a GTS .

As far as the talking head part of the equation , Michael has been getting an ear full over the head sets from Vince of all people. Vince was the one that put Cole in the situation and he really doesn't need to press the issue right know when he has more pressing problems.

Going back to a subject I had talked about before , Moose's surgery went well and the word is she will be out for a minimum of six months . I know that I seem overly fixated on the female divisions of both companies but one sets them selves up as the best looking women on TV. One has to back that statement up. Gail Kim is still one of the looking women on either side of the ring and the WWE through her out like so much trash.

Finally ,there seems to be an interesting direction that Kane's character is taking . After the four way was over on Monday night he attacked Michal Cole and kept shouting “is he alive or dead” . Oddly Paul Bearer had no real comment on his blog other then to say “interesting storyline isn't it”. that all for know, you may here from me late in the week.

Will Competition Return to Pro Wrestling?

Will pro wrestling ever see competition again? That is a question many wrestling fans are wondering about since the death of WCW. TNA is the closest to competition but that is going to take a lot more with brand awareness and of course putting on shows people want to watch. The WWE is the big dog in the yard and there hasn't been really a lot of companies wanting to challenge them and can't financially. That is going to be the big factor on that.

TNA itself has its own problems and for whatever reason doesn't believe in advertising their product out. If you watch TV, you're most likely to see a WWE commercial and unless you are a regular TNA watcher, you wouldn't know when it's on. It is true that there are some talented performers in the company but it needs more work as far as getting more recognized. There isn't a wrestler from the past that could go in there and all of a sudden cause people to change the channel and watch TNA because of a big star. That type of effect has worn itself out and could not work with these times. It will come down to getting people to want to watch and think the show is great and worth watching every week. How do they expect to have a growing audience if they're not willing to get advertising for their shows or the big PPV events? You can't no matter how great the product may be in your own eyes.

The WWE right now is sitting pretty and at this moment will have 9 championships pretty soon. It is divided up really into two main shows and one for development purposes. The brand extension has really made it seem like being a World Champion has become a bit too easy. Before the death of WCW, you had one World Championship and that person was to be considered the best in the industry or the man. To me, it makes it seem like the challenge has just been somewhat taken away but that's just one opinion on that. There shouldn't be 2 sets of tag titles since it's blatantly obvious that the tag team division is very weak in separate entities and should just be a tri-branded title. As far as a new Woman's Title, I'm against it because I believe there should be one Woman's Title and should be defended on all shows. Even to an extent, I would prefer there to be one World Championship because to be the leader, there should be one, not two, don't even think about three if you count the ECW Title as a World Championship.

Can someone come in there and become an immediate competition? Obviously that can't be done. What about financially? Unless you got either Bill Gates or Donald Trump backing you as the third promotion, you are pretty much out of luck. The only way for that to happen would be having a few guys that some may recognized that are actually pretty good and not a bunch of guys that are either past their prime or have never been a real success as a top talent. You always need new guys and that is a foundation to continue the evolution of wrestling.

Pro Wrestling needs competition to return because without it, it becomes stagnant. Look at what would happen to certain business's without competition. In the video game industry, you have Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft as the primary competitors and without that, one company would control the market and the system may be too expensive to buy and the same can be said about the games. Same can be said in the restaurant world and without someone in competition, you won't have to be at your best to keep customers.

Will it happen? I don't know at this moment in time but if the industry is to propel any higher, it needs it big time.

Mark Henry Wins ECW Title

Former Olympic weight lifting star Mark Henry has lifted his first heavyweight title in the WWE. The man billed as the world's strongest man won the company's ECW World Title at the Night Of The Champions pay-per-view this past Sunday. With his win coming one week after controversial WWE writer Michael Hayes returned to work after being suspended for racial slurs (a 60 day suspension), many are asking was this win a way of redeeming Hayes and appeasing some of the roster who were effected by the incidents that caused Hayes suspension in the first place.

It's hard to say in an environment where decisions are pre-planned and storylines altered sometimes hastily due to injury etc, just what thought went into this decision to put the title around the waist of Henry. Some will see it as a way of pleasing people who see Hayes as some form of racist, using the win as a means of elevating a black star to the lofty heights of champion.

Others will see it simply as a good business move, Mark Henry was the only current ECW star in the three-way match he took part in (the recent WWE draft moved the current champ from ECW), so the odds of him winning the title were very good anyway.

There have been a number of black champions in the past, but not many have made it to world champion, Ron Simmons and The Rock being the two most notable for WCW and WWE respectively.

Henry should try to capitalise on his new status, as his on-air and in-ring work to date have been non-noteworthy, this could be his big break and chance to prove his worth, no matter how he achieved it.

Predictions for the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2009

The WWE will be inducting new wrestlers into the Hall of Fame next year and based upon last year, it will probably be a Texas-based theme. As you probably know, Wrestlemania 25 will be in Texas and to fit tradition, it is time to look at some of the possible candidates. Each year there have been inductees but without further or do, I'm going to pick out a few and give some possible reasons as to why they will probably get inducted.

The Funk Brothers: While they had a run in the WWF that didn't last long, mostly they would be known as NWA wrestlers well maybe Terry for more than that. Terry for sure will get in and was considered by many a guy who would put over stars to help other guys become bigger than what they are. Dory I never saw much about him but I know him and Terry were both NWA Champions probably making them the only brothers to ever have held the NWA Title. His last national appearance on TV would be if I recall correctly on the Raw to build up One Night Stand and man was he in horrific shape and could barley walk down to the ring. However, that shouldn't really be the legacy. The legacy would be two brothers while going separate paths will be known as former NWA Champions.

The Von Erich Family: Nothing else could be said other than some of the documentary in the WCCW DVD that the WWE produced though there is more information about this team. The only thing that may stop this would be the suicides happening and the tragedy that had befallen the Von Erichs. Kevin Von Erich says there isn't a curse but more of a situation that his brothers had done to themselves. Most likely if you were in the Texas area and saw WCCW back in the 80s, that could strengthen the case of putting them in. I know you're thinking well they weren't big in WWE but neither was Verne Gagne and he was inducted. The only member of the Von Erich family that wrestled in the WWE, back in the WWF era in the early 90s would be Kerry Von Erich.

Stone Cold Steve Austin: Most likely the one that will be the headliner for this class of 2009. You wouldn't think he'd be inducted for at least a few years but it's bound to happen and probably the one that will close the Hall of Fame presentation. Here's a guy who has won 3 Royal Rumbles, been a 6-time WWE Champion, and arguably the face of the Attitude Era.

The Freebirds: What could be said about the original Freebirds? Probably most famous would be for the feud in Texas with the Von Erichs. That was a big deal back then and you had to think back on that. I do remember the Freebirds but they weren't the original ones in WCW with Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin. Again after seeing some footage of the past and how they separated themselves from the pack and probably becoming one of the first if not the first “cool heel” in wrestling.

These are my picks for the 2009 WWE Hall of Fame. I don't expect there to be any wrestlers inducted that are active in the ring at least in the mainstream. There will be others going in the future. This class may be large but it makes sense based upon the Texas based area. Enjoy and whether or not these picks actually happen will be another story.

JR comes out to big pop after Vicky introduces him and he seems to be ready to go. I know that on Monday when his picture came up on the titantron , his jaw dropped to the floor like a cartoon anvil. It was widely reported that JR wasn't happy at all and seriously thought of hanging it up. He wasn't informed in advance, and in my mind breaking up him and Jerry Lawler may have been a big mistake.

HHH came out to huge pop and told JR that if there was anyone he would have brought over with him it would have been JR. HHH then started talking about the fans and how he was happy to be there when in reality he's happy because his wife is about to have there second child and then come out on the road with smack down so he'll be around to help her out.

Edge interrupted the Game and after a few minutes of marking their territory, Batista came out on ramp and while Edge distracted HHH thru him out of the ring and into a runaway spear from the Animal.

The first match of the night was a tag team encounter that pitted three of the wrestlers in Sundays three way dance for the ECW belt that was Kane , The Big Show and Mark Henry going after the title. Tonight has Mark Henry and MVP goes against Kane and Show. MVP has been jawing lately about his contract and has been actively seeking to switch shows. I for one was completely caught off guard when they didn't move him to raw. During this evenings match, MVP was avoiding the Big Show so much that he tried to leave the ring and his own partner throw him back in the ring and right into a choke slam from Kane.

Finlay and Hornswoggle took on Rider and Hawkins in a tune up for Sundays encounter with the WWE tag team champions The Miz and John Morrison . Finlay himself was dominate over the two EDGE lackeys and it ended with the Tadpole Splash.

Backstage EDGE is whining to his future bride Vicki about Batista taking his belt and she tells him to focus on Matt Hardy and she assures him he will get his belt back.

Matt Hardy and EDGE went toe to toe with Hardy dominating EDGE early on . I for the life of me don't get moving Matt Hardy to ECW when they moved Jeff To Smack down . You would have to upper card guys that have never been more popular, who could team up and dominate the tag team division , and as an added bonus you could have a sort of Cain and Abel type feud between the two of them. If the goal of this draft was to prop up Smackdown for their network switch , they really dropped the ball on this move. Anyway after a great match that went back and forth for a long time EDGE hit a spear and pinned Hardy.

After a music video type promo of brother Jeff its announced that Jeff's debut will be next week. A have one great hope in this. Somewhere in the near future Jeff and The Undertaker will have a rematch of one of the greatest matches I have ever seen. The ladder match on Raw between The Under taker and Jeff Hardy was to this day one of the best regular TV matches of all time.

Mayrse , Natalya and Victoria take on Kelly Kelly ,Cherry and Michelle McCool in yet another audition match to find out who's going to face Natalya for the new Smackdown womans belt. as I have said before , with the completion's Knockout division getting serious pop , I'm glad to see that they are taking steps to upgrade the Divas. Mayrse caught Cherry for the win so it will be interesting to see who's the other have of this fight is

Next in the chute , two OVW alumni square of with ones career on the rise , and the others in serious transition . Domino, former one half of the WWE tag tem champions pretty much has split from his partner Deuce and he went up against the Russian Vladimir Kozlov. Its strange that in a world of big entrances , Kozlov coming out to no music at all oddly works. He has a very menacing presence and the silence just adds to it. While Domino is on his own know and heade for some lean times ahead, he gave the big Russian his toughest test to date but in the end Kozlov prevailed.

Rey came out to say goodbye to the Smackdown fans and got his pop in. They have been talking about this move for awhile and while a like the move, I still cant help but think that if your loading up for the switch in networks, why not keep at least some of top tier guys.

The main event has Batista in his last match before he goes to RAW against the Samoan Bulldozer Umaga. The most interesting part of this is the internet story that the WWE is going to turn Umaga Baby face and let him work the mike. Batista had Umaga beat when EDGE and his Goons hit the ring . They wail on the Animal until the Game hit's the ring and cleans house. The show closes with a Pedigree an a Batista Bomb to Hawkins and Rider.

With the creative problems they have had over the past few months I understand that this draft was necessary but there are thing about it I just don't get. ECW was screwed losing what little they had and gaining something that I have no idea how they will use in Matt Hardy. Raw has defiantly been weakened losing it number one star and breaking up its number one announcing team. And in all this mess, where does the Undertaker fit.
