It will be a crazy year for football this season. I am really excited to see what happens. This year Florida will be #1 with their starting quarterback Tim Tebow winning the Heisman Trophy for the second year in a row. Many people believe that Georgia will become the National Champion this year, but Georgia will choke at the most important time (the end of the season.) LSU will have another close to undefeated year, and by their luck will be chosen to play Florida in the National Championship.

This year many teams ranked not as high could make some noise. Utah could go undefeated. With their first game at Michigan they could pull an upset. With a struggling Michigan team with a brand new Coach and quarterback. Utah also has Oregon State, BYU, and TCU all at home this year. With those four wins the rest of the season will be a piece of cake, and then they will have their second BCS appearance.

Another team that could make a surprise is BYU (A Mountain West Conference team along with the Utah Utes.) This year BYU is downgrading their schedule in order to make a BCS bid. Meanwhile Utah is upgrading their schedule by playing Michigan and Oregon State. If BYU beats TCU and Utah on the road they will have a great shot at making a BCS game.

This year is going to be an exciting year. I could see a lot of upsets coming this year. I think many teams and players will surprise people this year. You'll just need to sit by the T.V. and soak it all in. So lets get ready for the 2009 college football season!

Baseball and LSU Men

Baseball season has started and it's time for fun. I don't really have a favorite team anymore. I used to love the Yankees, but it's hard to like them as much as I used to. I do pull for the Red Sox if they get into the playoffs and all. I keep track of all the LSU men in the professional ranks. And the Tigers have some good players.

Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot play for the Cubs and helped them to the playoffs last year. Brad Hawpe plays for the Rockies and does a wonderful job. Aaron Hill play for Toronto and is getting better all the time. LSU has a few other players, but these guys are the ones I follow. The Tigers also have many men in the minors and I keep tract of them also.

The LSU baseball fortunes have fallen on some hard times as of late. They are getting a little better, but they have a ways to go. I do like to keep track of the former Tigers as they make a name for themselves, and the school, in the professional ranks.

LSU Signs On To Play Appalachain State: Does ASU Have a Shot?

After taking down Michigan in the Big House last year in one of the greatest upsets in sports history, the Appalachain State Mountaineers have their sights set on frying an even bigger fish next year.

The defending BCS Champion Louisiana State Tigers have announced that they will bring in Appalachain State for a game August 30th, which will be the opener to the 2008 college football season for the Tigers.

This matchup marks the first time the BCS Champion will play the FCS Champion from the previous year. But does Appalachain State really have a chance to beat the Tigers on the road?

Appalachain State does return a good deal of their skill talent from last year including lightning quick quarterback and superstar Armanti Edwards, but the main disadvantage they'll be at is the fact that they won't be able to sneak up on the Tigers like they did Michigan last year.

LSU is also a better team than that Michigan squad even with their losses to graduation and the NFL including quarterback Matt Flynn and superstar defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. But LSU will have some uncertainty going into the year as well that could play in Appalachain State's favor.

Quarterback Ryan Perriloux was supposed to be the starter but he has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules and now LSU will be breaking in a new starter.

Appalachain State should be able to move the ball some on LSU's defense because they're so talented but in order to stay in the game they will have to jump out to a lead and make some stops on defense like they did against the Michigan Wolverines. They will also need some luck such as how they were able to block UM's last-second game-winning kick.

LSU should be able to run the ball all day on a woefully small Appalachain State defensive line as Michigan did, so the Mountaineers' ability to get the lead will be key. If they're behind, LSU will run the clock out behind potential star running back Keiland Williams and their big offensive line. Williams sat the bench behind Jacob Hester last year at LSU but is faster and has a little more talent overall than Hester did and is waiting to break out.

In reality, this game will be a moral victory for ASU if they manage to stay within two touchdowns of the defending champs. But the Mountaineers will be preparing and practicing and lifting as hard they possibly can in anticipation of this game all summer so it's a bit too premature to completely rule out the possibility of an upset.

One thing's for sure: LSU had better come ready to play because the Mountaineers are bound to be pumped up for another chance to prove themselves.

Jan. 1, 1921 Rose Bowl-- California 28, Ohio St. 0

Jim Tressel's personal bowl record is 4-2. I am predicting that OSU finally breaks the curse against the SEC. Their record will be 1-8 versus SEC teams. OSU is due for a win. They will avenge last year's loss against Florida; breaking their losing streak to the SEC dating back to 1978 Sugar Bowl. The final score will be 21 - 17 Ohio State.

BCS: A History

There are college football fans all over the world. People like myself, and probably you if you are reading this, love the game, the excitement, and the tradition of what many believe is the most American of all sports.

Unfortunately, trouble has come to try to drag down the game. It has been called tyrannical, evil, greedy, selfish, and irresponsible. Some think of it as wonderful, maybe the best thing that has happened to American sport. Most, though, simply know it as the BCS.

The Bowl Championship Series was created after the 1997 season, in which yet another national championship was split, this one between Michigan and Nebraska. Many were tired of not having one clearly defined national champion. The creators of the BCS system, which would use a combination of human polls and computer formulas to make a final ranking system, claimed that they could declare a definitive national champion every year without controversy. The system was adopted quickly by the NCAA and would be put into action in time for the 1998 season. After all, if this would really end disputes and shared titles, it would solve o many problems. But when it did exactly the opposite, so many more were created.

The First Debate
2003

A historic season, this is still mentioned by BCS critics trying to show that the system is severely flawed. The LSU Tigers were upset early in the year by Florida but did not lose another game that regular season. Included in that was an extremely important win over Ole Miss, which put the Tigers into the SEC Championship Game, where they soundly beat Georgia. They were near the top of the polls, but a one-loss team would need to have everyone else lose to have a shot at the national championship game. USC, also near the top was the main competition with the Tigers to play in the championship game, had also lost, in a triple-overtime thriller at Cal.

Going into the Big XII Championship Game, Oklahoma was the only undefeated team and a clear #1 in the polls. LSU was ranked second, USC third. It was clear that once Oklahoma beat Kansas State to win the Big XII, they would play against LSU for the championship.

However, the Oklahoma-Kansas State game, played in Kansas City, didn’t exactly go as planned, as K-State beat OU 35-7 in a game that was never close. Most now believed that with Oklahoma’s loss, that USC would move into the national championship game against LSU. However, amid great controversy, the computer formulas kept Oklahoma at #1, and in the championship game. USC was left to play against Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

LSU beat Oklahoma in the title game, claiming the BCS National Championship. However, after USC defeated Michigan, it was the Trojans who claimed the Associated Press National Title. It was another split championship, the very thing this system promised to end.

The Second Debate
2004

The year after that pile-up at the top, chaos ensued, as five teams (USC, Oklahoma, Auburn, Utah, and Boise State) all finished the 2004 season undefeated. Only two could play for the title, so three were left out. USC beat Oklahoma to claim the national title, but Auburn and Utah also finished the season without a loss. The calls for a playoff came, but fell on deaf ears.

Today, college football still operates under the system that has seemingly cheated teams out of championships. Many want a playoff, but none is in the works, leaving fans out in the cold, with no answers. Will there be a new solution? A radial change? Slight adjustments? Or will the system continue to determine our champions? Only time can tell.
