How to Drift in an Underpowered Car

Before getting started you will need a list of things:

A Car with Rear-Wheel Drive (LSD is preferred but it is possible to drift in a car with a normal differential)

An open Track or a concrete ground, free of people other cars and especially POLICE!

A pair of used tires for the rear axle

First Aid Box (In Case of emergency)

Cones or Chalk pieces to marks points

Getting Started:

The first thing that you need to master is 180' turn. Without mastering the basics of drifting you cannot drift in an under-powered car. First place a cone on the track where there is enough space around as your car will be turning 180 degrees into the direction which it came with the radius of its length. For begging approach the cone with a low speed about 20 kmph or less, as you approach the cone step on the clutch at the same time step off the gas and start to slightly turn towards at the, just as you do this step you will feel under-steer, as soon as this happens pull the E-Brake, when you do this your rear will lose traction and turn into the direction which it came from. This is Called a 180

The next is 90' Turn it is almost the same as 180 turn but you will need to cut short on the E-brake , counter steer while sliding and then stepping on the gas with out stooping the engine, it will take a bit practice but you should be able to master it in 3-4 months. By now you should be able to pull the e-brake, counter-steer while sliding and step on the gas while your car's tail is sliding. Now you are ready to drift for first time.

The Beginner's Technique: The E-brake Drift

This is the most easiest technique which you can use to drift, it is actually very basic technique and you will enter the corner at a slow speed, find a hair-pin curve or make a hair-pin curve with cones or chalk and do the following:

Before reaching the corner reach a reasonable speed about 60 kmph.

Now apply a brake a bit to let the momentum shift

As you are about to reach the corner shift down to 2-gear.

Step on the clutch with the right foot off the gas pedal

Now start turning slightly into the corner and pull the E-brake and now wait until you feel that the end of you car is starting to slide

Now quickly counter-steer to face the exit of the corner

As you release the E-brake, start steeping on the gas with the foot still on the clutch

Now release the clutch and keep your foot on the gas

Now something really important comes in which is called throttle control , if you increase throttle your cars turning angle will increase, if you decrease throttle your turning angle will increase

Note: To master the above technique you will need to step on the gas from the entry to the exit of the corner.

Weird, odd, strange, and rare racing events are all over the place. The following is a sampling of some of the racing events to be found.

Camel Racing

Arab Nations have a rich history of camel racing but after world-wide condemnation towards their use of small young boys as young as 4 years old to be the jockeys, Dubai switched to using small robots as the Jockey.

Miniature Chariot Horse Racing
Miniature horses hooked to miniature chariots with a miniature jockey in a young kid. Kids racing miniature horses and chariots.
Lawnmower racing

Lawnmower racing is so popular it even has it's own video game.

The stock classes are pretty darn slow but in the modified classes these riding lawnmowers can get some speed. To learn more about the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association or to find a listing of sanctioned events check out the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association web page.

Unicycle Racing

With a wide range of events including a 10 kilometer marathon Unicyclist racers have to be crazy. As if riding a unicycle is easy much less adding a competitive flair to the sport by a multitude of racing events. Check out the official USA Unicycling Racing Web Site.

Semi Truck Drifting

You've seen the movie Fast and The Furious:Tokyo Drift. You know that drifting is a lot of fun to watch. You know that drifting makes a lot of money for the Goodyear tire company. Did you know a few people drift semi trucks. Its got to be expensive on the tires and gas.

Antique Tractor Pulls

With events held all over the United States with many different associations there is bound to be an antique tractor pull near you. Antique tractor pull associations generally sanction and promote events:

To help preserve a piece of history

To have a fun time

To raise Money for Charities

Trailer races

At circle tracks around the country promoters are turning to trailer races to help get new spectators to the race track. After all the racing is done for the evening they pull out the trailers and hook them onto cars. Camp trailers, boat trailers, horse trailers and any other toe of trailer they can come up with.

The cars with the attached trailers begin racing around the track. Generally the rule is to knock the crap out of your opponents trailer. Last trailer standing wins. Who actually cares who wins. Spectators just want to see the destruction.

The trailer race is the last race of the night. It may take 3-4 days just to pick up the mess around the track.

Porcupine Races

I can't make this up.
Council Idahos 4th of July celebration feature A Porcupine Races to raise money for charity. Don;t worry no porcupines are harmed. Can't make that promise for the people involved though. An occasional stray porcupine can send the audience running.

Pics Of Porcupine Racing

Is Nascar a Sport?

Some people say all NASCAR is, is turning left, stepping on the gas, and going in a big circle. Well for one, it's not all left because road courses have right turns. And two, I'd like to see who ever thinks NASCAR is just turning left actually drive a race. Temperatures soar to 110 F in the car that they drive in for several hours. That takes both physical and mental training to deal with that while going an excess of 180 mph+ with other cars just inches away. Just one twitch of the wheel and you, the car, and most of the cars and their drivers around you are gone, bye-bye, cya later in the hospital. Most of the time it's not that serious but when they are bad, you don't want to be near that car.

Then there is the pit crew. They can change 4 tires, fuel a car, repair some damage, clean your windshield, and adjust the wedge in less than 20 seconds! Try doing that to your parent's car with some of your friends. I bet you couldn't get in done in 20 minutes.

Now back to the driver because some cars still don't have power steering which means for some of you non-car guys, that you have to turn the wheels the way you want them to go when they want to go a completely different way. Also, as I said before, Temperatures can reach around 110F in the car, and that's on a good day. With all of the above said added up, together the driver can loose up to 10 lbs in a single race. Try that weight loss plan!

Then there's the money, ah, sweet, sweet money. Don't we all just love that green? Well drivers do earn a lot of it but they don't keep much. That money has to go to the team for research, chassis, engine, gas, tires, parts, crew salaries, and pay checks. Then you got your advertisements and your sponsors which all have to be in on a percent of that money. That added up, the money goes away really fast. Then if someone gets hurt, there's the medical bill, which can get really high in some major wrecks.

So what if I said all baseball was is hitting a ball and running around four bases? Or that basketball is just throwing a ball into a hoop? Or that football is just catching a ball and running? Why don't you think NASCAR can be a sport?

So that being said, do you think NASCAR can be a sport? If not, then you're entitled to you own opinion and I respect that but right or wrong, NASCAR is not only a sport, it's a way of life for a lot of us.
