Winter Biking 101

Biking in Chicago year round has left me with years of experience. Winter here ranges from below zero temperature to high winds and feet of snow on the roads. Before you plan on leaving, always check the local weather. Is it snowing? Raining? Windy? Is there unmelted snow on the road or are the roads still wet? If there are any hold ups such as these, allow yourself 25%-50% more travel time, depending on bike and pace.

When riding in the winter, always be on the look out for black ice. Black ice is thinly spread ice across the surface of concrete from frozen rain or sleet. If you’re riding and hit black ice, be ready for an almost instant wipe out. Always keep an eye out for the conditions, in which it has rained recently and is below freezing. If you’re riding and black ice is present, be cautious, ride slower and if you hit a patch, pull your feet off the pedals and stabilize yourself to prevent a fall.

Make sure when riding in winter conditions to never go as fast as you would during the summer. Black ice, sliding cars, pedestrians and other slow moving bikers leave you with an array of hazards and potentials mishaps. Keep your head up and give yourself 30%-50% more braking room incase you hit ice, snow or see a reckless car.

Keep yourself, your bike and your pathway well lit. In the winter, not only is it harder for you to see the road, but difficult for drivers to see you. If it’s night and snowing, it will be impossible for a driver to see you without a light. That driver will have no idea you’re there and could easily slide into you or rear end you in a dense fog or storm. Keep your path lit so you can prepare for and stabilize yourself for upcoming patches of ice or snow mounds.

When riding during harsh weather conditions use your legs as stabilization incase you begin sliding. Drop your legs down to brace yourself and brake simultaneously. When braking during extreme weather conditions, always apply the same amount of pressure to both brakes, which helps distribute your weight evenly, preventing further sliding.

If there is snow on the ground and you live in a big city, it’s usually plowed from the roads. This is great for cars, but the snow gets plowed into the bike lanes. An easy solution to this is to simply bike in the lanes of traffic used for cars. What this allows is you more traction on the road and the cars more visibility. Don’t worry about them because usually they can’t go much faster than you in dicey weather conditions.

Always keep your head up, wear a helmet and allow extra braking and sliding room. Keep in mind that the drivers in the car usually can’t see you and be aware of slick patches of ice. Happy biking, hopefully you can enjoy a safe and productive biking schedule through the cold winter.

Skateboarding Tricks And Tips: How To OllieHey if your reading this I'm guessing you want to learn how to ollie, and I'm going to teach you. :PMost people think that you need to snap down all the way, but you don't. When I first was learning I snapped down my tail/nose just a little, jumped with both feet, and I slide my foot and landed. At first I didn't get that much air but I was learning.

Now I'm good and I snap down most of the way.Well to ollie, you place one foot right before the bolts with your heel off the board and your foot straight. Your other foot is on your tail/ nose in the same position, your heel halfway off the board. Then you snap down, jump with BOTH feet, and slide your foot that is right before the bolts and land.Well hopefully you got some air and landed, if not, keep trying, you will get it in time. Also please comment I like reading them. And please click the “I like it” button. Thanks =D

10-Step Guide to Running a Mile in Seven Minutes

Hoping to join your school's track team? Wanting to pass the presidential fitness test? Wishing you could run with your schools cross country team? Just wanting to be in better shape? Then this is the guide for you!

Whatever your reason is, running a mile quickly, or even running it at all can be quite the challenge, but if you simply follow this 10-step guide, you'll be showing people up in no time.

1. It's important to remember that you can run the mile! If you stick with it, you'll get it.

2. It will help you when running, and recovering if you eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, and carbohydrates (pasta, bread, potatoes, etc.)

3. When running, a good breathing technique is crucial. Breathe in through your nose, and out of your mouth

4. Just as important as breathing, a good running technique can make or break a runner. It's important to lift your knees up high on each step, land on your heels, and roll through the step, saving all the energy you can.

5. As you start each mile you run, it's critical that you don't start too fast. As you run, you need to add speed, not lose it.

6. When you train yourself, it's important not to keep your muscles sore. Take a break after every run! Wait at least one day after a run. I recommend waiting up to a week between runs for a new runner.

7. STRETCH! Stretching before a run will stop you from hurting yourself, and stretching after a run will leave you less sore the next day.

8. Set goals and push yourself! If you run a 12 minute mile one week, try to run an 11:30 mile the week after!

9. Conditioning can help you if you don't feel like running one day. I suggest lunges, a few squats, and A LOT of sit ups! Abdominal muscles are a runners most important!

10. Finally, don't hurt yourself! Take running at your own pace, and you'll reach your goals eventually!

Football Tips Pass Blocking

Pass blocking is only similar to run blocking because it's blocking. There is a lot more technique required to pass block as to run blocking having pure strength may allow you to get away with a few things however with pass blocking if you don't have proper technique your likely to give up a lot of sacks thus be sitting on the bench or perhaps not on the team at all.

Pass Blocking Technique

When pass blocking it is important to know all of your options however I will not go over cutting because today most athletes are able to recoil after getting cut down to the ground so I will focus on the most important fundamentals which is to fit, jam and control the defender. When pass blocking it is important to your use your hands and not putting your body outward. When pass blocking you will likely to be taking a certain amount of steps back (this depends on formation and play called). As you step back your hands must almost immediately be jamming outward, though depending on the rush it may not be necessary. However you must be in position and ready to jam, the idea of pass blocking is that you know the play called and where the quarterback is likely to throw which means you know how long your quarterback will need to throw. Ideally you should be protecting the quarterback for as long as he has the ball however if you have a scrambler you should have a timer in your head letting you know if your qb is about to take off. You should see him when he takes off and if he is in trouble unless the defender went through you it is important you don't let another defender through by leaving your assignment and trying to bail the qb out. Now if you let the defender through you have to go after him not pushing the defender in the back or holding but trying to be in position if the defender slips or has to turn and run to catch your qb. If a defender gets past you and you get the chance to block him again, let's say your qb is gifted enough to know to step inside the pocket or sprint away the defender should be free game for you to plant him one.

The most important thing to remember though when pass blocking it is a team effort you should be able to read a defense to know whose blitzing and which lineman is assigned to pick that defender up, as well their maybe a shift in pass protection sometime before the ball is hiked, and because defenders will blitz and run stunts everyone that is due to pass block plays a role in making sure no one gets to the qb so lineman can't be selfish if one guy doesn't know their assignments it could be a long day. There are many drills to practice some are the Two man Twist Drill which helps to work on passing off the defenders in zone schemes, when doing this drill you must keep your shoulders completely square. There is also the three men Twist Drill designed to pick up three men down, again shoulders should be square and vision must be kept wide for loop defenders. There are many different drills and techniques though it all depends on the team the coach and the plays called both on offense and defense. The more knowledgeable you are about these different drills and skills the better an offensive lineman should have the eyes of a quarterback. As a pass blocker you don't want to wait until your qb tells you this is coming you should be calling it out for him if anything seeing it's your job to protect him not the other way around.

Strength Training for Pass blocking

Upper Body-When training yourself to become a better pass blocker there are a few things you can do. One being the Jammer machine in the weight room. The Jammer machine is a great exercise because it causes you to bend your knees and extend your arms. When using the Jammer you must remember to stay in an athletic position, knee's slightly bent your butt in almost a sitting position and your hands in front of you. When extending always use enough weight to make explosive movements, a lot of people think and may tell you gaining muscle or strength means putting on as much weight as possible but it only drains you making you weaker for the next exercise on your work out plan. You want to choose weight you can extend out and as well make explosive choppy movements. When pass blocking you must make movements sort of like you're doing pushups, that's if you don't want to become an excessive holder. So the Jammer prepares you to do just that. Of course great upper body training is the bench now no matter if you're trying to be a full back, tight end, or offensive lineman the bench is a great practice tool. You want to be able to lift 225 lbs certainly and you want to be able to lift it as much as you can. You should always be trying to build up your strength on that amount of weight. A great way to do this is to lift just underneath 225 maybe like 200 or 205 you want to do this 2/3rd's of the days you work out. Once you lift on the other 1/3 you would want to lift a bit over 225 maybe like 250 if you can't lift 250 lift towel bench styles.

Towel bench is a great way to improve your overall strength always use a spotter no matter how easy you may think the weight is. Advice on reaching goals if you want to lift 225 40 times you should be lifting the lower weight (205) about 35 times warm up of 10 and then split your next three sets up with the remaining 20. You will be taking breaks in between your lifts but it is giving you the endurance you will need to lift 40 times as you work out more it will become easier to do. When lifting the 250 you want to do 25-30 reps again doing a 10 rep warm up.

Lower Body-The lower body area is just as important as the upper body in fact it maybe more important sense your lower body can get a lot stronger than you're upper. Great work outs to do would include Squats, Deadlight, and power cleans and leg press. The reason the lower body is important because lineman must always keep their feet moving that's how defensive lineman are trained so if you're going to move them you will have to be doing the same. You have to be able to drive your defender where ever you want him to go. When doing lower body it is very important to stretch multiple times, stretch between sets and between starting and ending your complete work out. Stretching is good because it helps improve your flexibility and when blocking period flexibility will increase durability. When lifting the lower body you don't want to lift your max all day or really at all. You want to do the same as the upper body be able to make explosive movements you will get use to the weight you are working with and then it will be time to increase the weight. Your overall max will improve greatly however it's really about developing the nasty streaks with your explosiveness.

Dieting

What you eat is very important there are many athletes learning they have diabetes on the professional level and in college unaware their whole lives and not having any problems with it. You must be careful not to eat too much greasy foods especially if you want to build muscle. But dieting helps not only your ability to build muscle but also your ability to perform. Eating a lot of carbohydrates before and after work outs is a good idea because carbohydrates supplies your body it's energy. However the diet you should choose varies upon position and upon the person and their own goals. Make sure that you choose a diet plan that best fits your personal goals. Choosing just any plan may slow up your progress, it is important to remember what you eat either helps your weightlifting or kills it. So be careful and research well.

Skateboarding Tips

The Basics

The first trick you are going to want to learn is a kickturn. To do this you put slight pressure on the tail of the board and rotate the board 180 degrees with your front foot. Make sure you move your body with the board or you will end up spinning and falling. Once you have this you should go up a slight hill and do a kickturn and go back down. Once you can do this you can try spinning more and more.

The next trick to learn is the manual. To do this you go up like a kickturn but you just ride straight. Your board goes up on 2 wheels and you keep riding. You are going to want to put your back feet behind the back bolts and your front feet halfway on the front bolts. Try and do this longer and longer until you can do this for a good distance.

Popping the Board

The ollie is your bread and butter of skateboarding. Once you get the ollie down a whole new world of tricks opens. To ollie you slam your back foot on the tail of board. the problem most people have with the ollie is that they cant get the board off the ground. Practice with just putting your back foot on the board. then just slam down as hard as you can. Once you can do that then get on the board. put all your weight on your back foot and slam! The board will go up and face diagonaly up. This is when you slide your front foot up the board and put all your weight on that foot. Make sure you suck up ur knees as high as they can go for maximum air. Once your legs and the board are even you even out your weight and come down and bend your knees to absorb the landing.

The next trick is the shuv-it. In this trick you dont pop the board in the air. You use your back foot ONLY to spin the board. While spinning the board scrape the tail against the ground and just let your front foot hang there when the board spins 180 degrees you "catch" it. just press your feet down at the right time. The pop shuv-it is the same thing as the shuvit but you do it all in the air. The tail wont scrape on the ground in this one.

The Kickflip

The most frustrating trick in skateboarding. This trick can take more than a year to learn. But if you know the right way it will be WAY easier. So you just do an ollie but slide your foot off the side of the board. DO NOT KICK THE BOARD STRAIGHT DOWN. You just want to flick it. You can flick it from all they way up the nose if you want. Remember not to stomp the board. Once you can get the board to rotate all the way around its time for the hard part. To land it you have to make sure you know its gonna flip all the around. The biggest problem people have, including me, is when you just land it with once foot. I tried one thing and landed the kickflip first try after trying for a year. BRING UP YOUR KNEES! if bring up your knes really high you will land it.

How to Skate a Halfpipe

OK so now your ready to skate a minipipe or halfpipe. Dropping in looks so easy but its not. I learned that the hard way. The most important thing ever is to LEAN FORWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!A LOT!!! I have been to the skatepark and i have seen many people drop in for the first time. I always tell them to lean forward but its never enough. You will always fall backwards. you have to be completely sideways because when your on a halfpipe your going straight down. If you do that then your set.

Ok now that you can drop in its time to learn the rock to fakie and tailstall. The rock to fakie and the tailstall combination is your bread and butter of the halfpipe. The rock to fakie is when you bring your front to wheels above the rail of the halfpipe then go back down fakie(backwards). Make sure you can skate backwards. Once your wheels are above make sure they dont get caught on the rail. Thats one way you get a bad butt hurtin while skating. Once you do the rock to fakie you are in perfect position for a tailstall. This is just when you lock your tail on the rail(you will be going backwards when you do this). Once you get locked in its just a drop in.

Skating Old School

Some of these tricks are pretty easy and they all look really cool. The boneles is where you grab the board and push off the ground with your back foot. If your back foot is your left foot then you grab with your left hand and vice versa. So lets just say your backfoot is your left foot. Your grab with your left hand on the outside of the board (where your toes are) right behind the front wheel. Take your left foot and jump off the ground. Bring everything up in the air then land it. Once you can do this then learn to do a boneless 180 wich is the same thing with a spin. You can do this over cones or whatever and it will look really cool.

Keeping a Catch Fresh

You're off-shore/on-shore fishing, and you've just caught a fish. He is a keeper, and you want to have him for lunch/dinner. You don't know how to keep him fresh, so you just lay him on your boat or on the dock and let him sit there until you've finished. WRONG!

In order to keep your fish alive and fresh after catching him you should immediatley put the fish in a cooler of ice. Fill the cooler almost all the way to the brim so if you catch another one, you can keep the new catch alive and fresh too!

How to be Good at Soccer

As some of you might know, soccer is the #1 sport. Some people are good at it, some are awesome, some are not that good. I sucked at it, but now I'm almost as good as a pro. This article will provide steps in your path of becoming a soccer pro!

Have access to a soccer ball. Duh. That is obvious. To be good at soccer, you gotta have a soccer ball, so you can practice after school, university or whatever. So, get a soccer ball. You can buy it at any sports store. It will cost anywhere around 5 to 20 dollars.

Have a bike pump! Eventually your soccer ball will get soggy and deflate. You will have to pump it up.

Have spare time because you will have to practice at least 1 hour a week.

Invite your friends! It's so much fun to play with your friends than play all by yourself.

The Rules of soccer

Don't touch the ball with your hands, don't grab onto other people, and that's it.

Running with the ball on the ground

To do that, have the ball in front of you, start running, and as you bring your foot up to the ball, push it forward (DON'T KICK IT!) with your foot, and then with the other, and keep on going.

Checking

Checking is one of the most important things in soccer. If you see a person running up to you from the front, put the tip of your left or right shoe on the ball, and roll it around the person into the direction of the foot you put on.

Scoring

Good job! Now you checked your opponents and have an opportuniti to shoot into the goalie post! For best results, run up to the goalie post, and have 4-5 meters between you and the post. Now with your foot, swing it back, and swing it forth hitting the ball with the sidey-tip of your shoe. Aim at the gate of course!

Tips and Tricks for Catching All Species of Gamefish When Fishing

Smallmouth Bass

They can be called Smallies or Bronzebacks, these fish are a thrill to catch because of their tiring fights!

Habitat: Usually hiding in types of structure such as rocks, fallen trees, or anything that will act as shelter.

Diet: They eat crayfish, frogs, insects, and also fish eggs.

Bait: You should use Crank baits, worm harnesses and spinner baits for best results

Largemouth Bass:

These are similar cousins to the Smallmouth bass.

Habitat: These fish can be found in calm shallow areas of lakes and large river bays.

Diet: Largemouth Bass like to eat insects, minnows, leeches, frogs, and mice.

Bait: Soft Plastic worms and frogs, surface lures, crankbaits and jigs will serve as a very tasty meal.

Northern Pike:

Pike are solitary. Females grow larger, faster, and live longer than males do. These can live up to 26 years!

Habitat: Pike are found in lakes where the water is either still or in slow currents.

Diet: Pike will eat anything that swims because of their big size and teeth! Their favorites are other fish such as perch. Frogs and mice , muskrats and duckling provide meals as well!

Bait: Trolling spoons with the colors of white and red are most effective. You can also use large crank baits and surface lures.

Muskellunge:

Baseball Hitting and Fielding Tips

Don't have your hands at the bottom of the bat. Keep them half way unless you like to choke up.

Have you legs spread out about to your shoulders and bend your nees.

Have your back elbow up and have your weight on your back leg.

Keep your eyes on the ball.

When you swing, swing slightly up because the ball is coming down to you. It will be a nice line drive.

Remember keep your eye on the ball because if its a ball and you swing and miss you will look pretty stupid.

Have your bat off you back shoulder. Have it in the air, but before you swing have your your bat lowered.

When a grounder come bouncing either time it right and catch it or if the field is bad keep your glove on the ground and let it hit you because if you miss the grounder and a run comes in and the other team wins. You will probably feel bad and the team won't like the slugger.

If there is a popfly catch it with both hands. I mean catch with both with your other and on the glove.

Hope you like these tips and that they help you a lot.
