Test Cricket: Two Days Two Centuries

Cricket is one of the wonderful games the world has ever seen. It is the longest one also which expands to 5 days. As far as the cricket is concerned, many records are available, on many departments like batting, fielding, bowling. Batting department is completely dominated by Master Blaster SACHIN TENDULKAR. He holds the record for most number of runs, maximum centuries, century versus all test playing nations etc. But an unusual record of scoring two centuries in two days in a test match is achieved by VIJAY HAZARE. It is indeed one of the rare records in test match cricket, which of course until now hasn't been able to achieve by anybody else.

Record:

He made this achievement against one of the toughest opponent, Australia in 1948. Australians batted first and managed to score 674 massive runs in their first innings. Following a huge target Indians were bowled out for 381 runs of which HAZARE scored 116 runs. Follow-On was enforced on India by the Australians. In the next day itself he again scored a brilliant century 145 runs and become the only player to score two centuries in two consecutive days. But the sad news is the India lost that match due to poor performances of the other Indian Players. Cricket has a long lasted history of seeing many unbelievable and rare records, some records takes many years to be broken, like that this record is yet to be achieved after VIJAY HAZARE.

Follow-On Rule:

The above said record came into effect because of the Follow-On Rule. A Test match consists of 4 innings, of which each side will play 2 innings. Team batting first bats until bowled out or declaration. After that Second team plays, in case if they were 199 runs short of the first teams total then first team can enforce the follow-on. If Follow-On enforced then Second team will have to bat in the 3rd innings.

Beijing Olympics: The Comedies and Tragedies

The 29th edition of the Olympics as many people had predicted was absolutely a great one with many new records being set. Among the various things that made it a very interesting one is that it was a combination of tragedy and comedy. Even if I was not yet born during many past Olympics, yet with the history I read and the ones I saw, I am making a stand that it should be one of the best. There are many things to talk about in the comedy aspect of the just concluded Beijing Olympics and one of them is the Usain Bolt of Jamaica who was said to show no respect for his competitors after setting a new world record of 9.68. Immediately after the race the new record was shown for everyone to which he went there stood by it and started dancing reggae which he frequently said was what that inspired him.

Another one was the news that horses were testing positive to drugs which I think is a funny thing. We have gone to the extent of injecting drugs into horses in the Olympic Games and not only ourselves anymore. It is indeed a bad idea if I may say and I know the authorities will have done something about it. The tragedy aspect was that those countries that people had expected will take most of the medals fumbled. Imagine USA dropping to second on the Olympic ranking and also Nigeria who had promised and promised to bring back home at least 10 gold medals bringing back just 2 silvers. I think by now USA should still be sad about their performance at the Beijing Olympics and be making amendments.

However the Beijing Olympics shall be a memorable one for everyone. It was the Olympics that some countries got their first medal. It was then Olympics that USA fell. It was the Olympics that the so called the giant of Africa (Nigeria) fumbled again in terms of track and field. It was the Olympics that Argentina became the first country to keep their soccer Gold since Hungary. It was the Olympics that China, the host country rose to the first on the Olympic ranking and Great Britain rising to fourth. Many wonders and many achievements were in the Beijing Olympics and as far as I am concerned, it was one of the best if not the best Olympics ever experienced.

Short Circuited

The San Diego Chargers entered Sundays game against the Minnesota Vikings 4-3 and heavily favored over the struggling Vikings. These are the very same Chargers that lit up the Houston Texans for 35 points in 18 minutes and 18 seconds, the week before. However, the Texans do not have the player that is now a lock for offensive rookie of the year and possibly a rushing title, running back Adrian Peterson.

The game started out well for the Chargers, as they took their second possession down the field 55 yards, and capped it off with a one yard Ladainian Tomlinson touchdown run. After that it all went down hill for the Chargers offense and eventually the defense, as Minnesota answered on their very next possession.

As Peterson took the ball over the left guard and into the end zone for his very own 1 yard touchdown run. The rest of the first half ended uneventfully for both teams until the last play. Minnesota tried to hit a last second field goal to give them the lead at halftime, but kicker Ryan Longwell missed short.

Antonio Cromartie was waiting in the end zone for just that, he fielded the ball a staggering nine yards deep and never looked back, as he rumbled 109 yards for a San Diego touchdown. Not only was this Cromartie’s third touchdown in a game and a half but it was and will remain the longest play in the history of the NFL.

The second half saw Minnesota take full control of the game, lead by their star running back Adrian Peterson. With 12:44 remaining in the third quarter Peterson broke off a 64 yard touchdown run, his second touchdown of the game. Minnesota quickly got the ball back as San Diego’s vaunted offense sputtered to a halt in the third quarter, not putting a single point on the board.

However, it wasn’t Minnesota’s running game that hurt the Chargers but the passing game. Quarterback Brooks Bollinger, who replaced the injured Tarvaris Jackson, tossed a beautiful pass downfield to Sidney Rice for a 40 yard touchdown pass, and a 21-14 Vikings lead.

The fourth quarter dawned and the Chargers offense continued to hibernate, as they managed to put only three points on the board with 14:09 remaining in the quarter. The next few drives ended uneventfully once again, until the Vikings got the ball back with 7:54 to play. One snap was all it took to put another touchdown on the board, as Adrian Peterson once again sprinted 46 yards to pay dirt, capping his scoring with his third touchdown of the game.

There would be no miraculous comeback in this one, as the only scoring done in the game after that point was Minnesota’s backup running back Chester Taylor, who pounded a 2 yard run into the end zone to make the score 35-17 Vikings. The big story of this game was soon to offensive rookie of the year, Adrian Peterson. Who amassed a staggering 296 rushing yards( NFL Record) on 30 carries, and added 3 touchdowns to his already high total of 5. There was no comparison between him and reigning NFL MVP Ladainian Tomlinson who only managed 40 yards on 16 carries and had only 1 touchdown.

San Diego looks to regroup next week against the Indianapolis Colts(7-1), while the Vikings look to build off of an amazing performance when they visit Green Bay(7-1).

Bill Parcells Owes Bill Belichick

One glance at Bill Parcells head coaching record reveals that he was a great NFL coach. His overall regular season record is 172-130-1. Good for a .568 winning percentage. His playoff record is even better at 11-8 (.579), and includes 3 trips to the Super Bowl, and two Super Bowl victories.

Any NFL head coach would love to have that record.

Now look at this coaching record:

Regular season record of 67-76-1 (.465). Playoff record of 1-4 (.200).

Not too many NFL head coaches would be proud of that record. But you know what? That second coaching record is also Bill Parcells. That is Parcells head coaching record without Bill Belichick running his defenses.

When Parcells was named New York Giants head coach back in 1983, he retained Bill Belichick on his staff (Belichick was originally hired by the Giants in 1979). In 1985, Parcells appointed Belichick as his defensive coordinator.

In the 1983 and 1984 seasons the Giants were a combined 12-19-1 and went 1-1 in the playoffs with Belichick on the staff but not officially running the defense.

From 1985 to 1990 the Giants went a combined 65-30 and were 7-2 in the playoffs including 2 Super Bowl wins over the Denver Broncos in 1987 and the Buffalo Bills in 1991 with Belichick as the defensive coordinator.

Belichick then went on to coach the Cleveland Browns and Parcells eventually ended up in New England coaching the Patriots. Without Belichick from 1993-1995 Parcells went 21-27 with one playoff loss in New England. Belichick joined Parcells Patriots staff and ran the defense for the 1996 season and the Pats went 11-5 and 2-1 in the playoffs were they ended up losing the Super Bowl to the Green Bay Packers.

Both Parcells and Belichick then moved on to the New York Jets from 1997-1999 and the Jets went 29-19 over the 3 years with a 1-1 playoff record with Belichick running the defense. Parcells then “retired” and Belichick went on to coach the New England Patriots.

Parcells then un-retired and coached the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-2006 and compiled a 34-30 record with a 0-2 record in the playoffs without Belichick .

So Bill Parcells head coaching record with Bill Belichick running his defenses is a combined 105-54 (.660) in the regular season and 10-4 (.714) in the playoffs including two Super Bowl victories and one Super Bowl loss.
Entering the 2007 season Bill Belichick’s regular season head coaching record in New England is 75-37 (.670) and his playoff record is 12-2 (.857) including 3 Super Bowl victories. (Belichick’s Cleveland Brown record is not nearly as stellar.)

Clearly Bill Parcells owes a great deal of his head coaching success to Bill Belichick. Without Belichick on his staff Parcells head coaching record is under .500 and he never won a playoff game (0-3). Without Parcells around Belichick has won 3 Super Bowls and compiled a stellar record in New England. While some may say that Belichick learned from Parcells, the records indicate that’s not really true or Parcells would have won with or without Belichick on his staff.

In the end you cannot take away anything from Bill Parcells head coaching record in the NFL. He was smart enough to recognize Bill Belichick’s talents at running defenses and he made full use of those talents many different times and for three different teams. Both head coaches will end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, but there can be no mistake as to which one is the better coach and which one owes the other.
