How to Hold a Tennis Racket

A guides for all those who are new to the game of tennis.

The most important thing in tennis is how good your racket is. Even if Federer plays with a nasty racket,he is bound to lose. The first most important thing is to get yourself a great proper tennis racket. Lets move on the second most important thing ,which is how to grip your racket. The grip of the racket is another major important factor which usually decides the outcome of any game. The grip about which I am going to talk is the Universal grip better known as the continental grip, this was also known as the Aussie grip some time back. This grip can be used for any short but these days it is used only for the serve and the volley. Let me now guide you on how to grip your tennis racket. This includes a series of steps, the first one is to hold the racket in your hand, after doing so you must make sure that the racket is perpendicular to the ground, the first step is over lets now move on to the second step, once you grip the racket properly you should follow this up by placing your hitting hand on the racket, as if you are shaking hands. The next step is to have a good study of the racket, a tennis racket is eight-sided four sides are flat four sides are beveled.

The next step is to place the index finger's base knuckle on the top right bevel. The side of the thumb should be resting along the back of the racket, or, the opposite side of the grip. After doing this you must make sure the second and the third fingers are slighty separated. You are almost ready but before playing a match take one last test of your racket,in this step you must make sure that you test your grip, you can do so by testing your grip by bouncing a ball on the bottom edge of the racket frame. It should feel as though you are slicing the ball in half.

If you are not comfortable with your present grip you always have an option of chanfinf your grip, another way of holding the racket is the Semi-western grip. This grip gives you a great short selection option, you can always hit shots with a quick, upward motion when using this grip. And another major facto which must be kept in mind is to keep your fingers together, just as you would on the Western or Eastern grip.

This type of grip favours everybody no matter what your level is, it is the preference of clay court baseline players. one more thing which must be kept in mind is that when using this grip, it is more difficult to make the move to another grip for a backhand or a volley.
