Can Rebels Reel in Marlins

Preview of this weekend's Rugby Shute Shield Game between Southern Districts and Manly.

After a strong start to the year against Randwick last week, the Rebels again face a tough ask in Round 2 of the Toohey's Shute Shield against Manly Marlins at Manly Oval on Saturday 5 th of April.

Under new coach Craig Hawkings the Southern District Rebels will be looking to build on their solid defensive display of last week and get on top of the Marlins from the opening whistle.

Despite a first round loss against the reigning premiers Sydney Uni, Manly will once again be relying on captain and halfback Chris Cottee for some much needed direction. Last week's player's player back rower Wil Brame to maintain possession.

Another player who would like to stamp his authority early is Terry Autagavia who had a tremendous first round game and was rewarded a try for his efforts.

Manly coach Phil Blake will need to address a few issues before the game such as possession and discipline after too many penalties and turnovers were given away last week. This eventuately proved a contributing factor in Manly being unable to keep in touch on the scoreboard.

Junior Waratahs props Micah Watene and Daniel Palmer have been included in the HSBC Waratahs extended squad for the Super 14 match against the Blues and will be sorely missed. As will Australian Seven's representative centre, Rob Horne.

Captain James McCormack and his young side will have to overcome this setback if they are to press for a finals berth in a very tight competition this season.

The Rebels are a more committed side in 2008 and have shown there is plenty of talent on display. They should be assured of a much improved position on the Shute Shield table compared with their 11 th spot, with no wins out of ten games last year.
