Being a good hockey player means to have good if not great ice hockey skills. There are certain ice hockey skills that a player must possess like shooting, passing, skating and even shot blocking. Some ice hockey skills are more important than others. Here is what a good player needs to become a great player.
Shooting
All ice hockey skills are important. Shooting skills though, are pretty much essential. Whether the shot is a wrist shot, slap shot, snap shot or back hand, a good player needs to master them all. While some players might be better at snap shots than a wrist shot, all are important. In a game situation, the players cannot only rely on one shot to beat the other team's goaltender. In order to practice these shots you will need two things. You will need a net and some targets that you can hook up in each upper and lower corner. Each player should have 10 chances to hit the four targets with a shot. After the players go through different type of shots, the chance of making them should go from 10 to 8 and so on. With this exercise, the players will learn how to be precise with every shot they will use.
Passing
So the players know how to take the shot. Another important ice hockey skill is taking and receiving a pass. When you look at players who can make good passes, it almost always leads to a break into the offensive zone. Receiving a good pass can lead a player on a breakaway and score that all important goal. Exercises for this are pretty easy. Begin with two players skating from one end of the rink to the other. Each player will pass to the other and also receive. When they get use to this, add a player and make them pass to each other before getting to the other end of the rink. When the players get use to this, you can now divide your team in two groups and make them play a mini game against each other. The rule is that every player on a team must make and receive a pass before a goal can be scored. That way, each player will be able to be included in this exercise.
Shot Blocking
This can be a very dangerous skill to have. Some of the best players block shots. It is not fun, it can hurt, but if done well, blocking a shot can prevent a sure goal from going in. The trick to this, is when the player goes down to block the shot, he must immediately turn his head. The player does this so that he doesn't get the puck, which is coming at 100mph, in the face. This can be done at first without a puck. This is done so that the player can time when he will go down to block the shot.
Ice hockey skills are very important. Whether the skills are shooting, passing or shot blocking, these ice hockey skills will surely help your team and the player's success as an individual player.
