This year, college football is getting weirder and weirder. Over ten Top 10 teams have lost to unranked opponents. For the first time in half a decade, 5 of the Top 10 fell on one weekend! For the first time in about 11 years, the Number 1 and Number 2 teams were defeated on the same day.
However, there is one stat that stands out for me. In the past 5 weeks, four teams ranked No. 2 have lost: U.S.C., California, South Florida, and most recently Boston College. Now, L.S.U. is ranked second in the country. With one loss already, losing another game would end their hopes of going to New Orleans for the title game. Can they break the streak that started when Stanford, a 41-point underdog, shocked U.S.C. 24-23? Only time will tell.
Meanwhile, some teams are showing that they deserve to go to New Orleans, while others are redeeming themselves for a slow start to the year. My beloved Ohio State Buckeyes are currently undefeated and have been ranked Number 1 consistently for the past 5 weeks. The Oregon Ducks are showing they have potential. Last Saturday, they knocked off one of the few unbeaten teams left, the Arizona State Sun Devils. Now ranked third in the country, the Ducks have a chance of going to the BCS game.
There is also that team up north, as Ohio State fans call, it. The Michigan Wolverines have gone undefeated since a shocking beginning with losses to Appalachian State 34-32 and Oregon 39-7. This was a team ranked fifth in the country at first and a favorite to compete for the national title with returning seniors Chad Henne, Mike Hart, and Jake Long. Now, Michigan has proved that it still is one of America's top college football programs, despite losing to a 1-AA team. I must admit, the first two weeks of the season were the happiest 14 days of the entire year, until Michigan killed Notre Dame 38-0.
