Should the NCAA Adopt a Playoff System?

Decide whether or not the NCAA should stick with the current BCS ranking system or adopt a playoff system.

There has always been a controversy surrounding the BCS, but this year has caused it to dramatically increase. As more and more people are calling for a playoff system because of where teams are falling in the rankings. Right now the top 10 of the rankings stand at:

  1. Ohio State(10-0)
  2. LSU(8-1)
  3. Oregon(8-1)
  4. Kansas(9-0)
  5. Oklahoma(8-1)
  6. Missouri(8-1)
  7. West Virginia(7-1)
  8. Boston College(8-1)
  9. Arizona State(8-1)
  10. Georgia(7-2)

Now just looking at the rankings a lot doesn’t seem to be wrong, until you see how many times the #1 and #2 teams have changed this year and how often the rankings are shaken up with an upset. So far this year college football powerhouse Michigan had dropped out of the top 25 after a loss to division 2 Appalachian State, only to climb back into the mix for a bowl game and up to #12.

Three loss Florida sits at #15, one spot ahead of the undefeated Hawaii Warriors, one of only three undefeated teams left in the nation. A lot of people have been asking for a playoff system this year because of the upsets that have been seen this year.

Teams are going out and proving that despite ranking any team can win on any given day. However it looks like the NCAA has no interest in adopting a playoff system anytime soon, so yet again there will be a one or more loss team in the National Championship game simply because their schedule was viewed as tougher than an undefeated teams. One reason that seems to be keeping them from adopting a playoff system, is the amount of money that they and the schools make off of bowl games.

Having multiple bowl games instead of one large playoff bracket for the championship brings in more money. Mainly because each bowl game is individually sponsored, with one major sponsor and smaller ones that pay for the right to place a logo somewhere on the playing field or sidelines. And from that money the NCAA takes a portion, the schools that participate in the game get a portion, and the host school gets a portion.

Now I ask you to leave a comment, with your opinion on if a playoff system should be adopted, if we should stick with the current BCS system, or a way to improve the current system without resorting to a playoff bracket.
