Statistically and on paper this is a very solid move especially considering the position Henne was taken is a high value spot. The question is however is it really that smart of a decision? Is John Beck really not worth a closer look? Will Chad Henne ever be a good professional quarterback in the NFL? What needs did the Dolphins ignore with this pick? Was there any player of better value available at this position in the draft? In hindsight looking at the Dolphins needs there are so many it is impossible to fill them all in one draft but was this selection really filling a need? First off Chad Henne was a four-year starter at Michigan who was surrounded with a massive amount of talent and yet he could never propel his team to the National Championship and in many big games he seemed to disappear or play sub par. His statistics from his college career aren't overly impressive when you compare them to some of the other quarterbacks taken.
Henne seems like nothing more than a potential good starter if even that and the second round should be about finding the best player available to fill a need. If I had to select for this round my selection would have been either wide receiver Donnie Avery or James Hardy or even one of the top cornerback prospects that were still remaining Brandon Flowers was one of the cornerbacks still on the board at this selection. When the Dolphins took Henne they ignored glaring needs at wide receiver and cornerback, which offered much better value at their current position. When you look at the Dolphins quarterback situation objectively why would you give up on a young second round quarterback by drafting another quarterback high? With the young Beck and an experienced although mediocre veteran in Josh Mccown the dolphins had much bigger problems than quarterback. With very little talent on the team how could they expect Beck let alone another young quarterback to succeed? Chad Henne has been thrust into a miserable situation with a mediocre offensive line and a very below average wide receiver corp.
Running back is the teams lone bright side if Ronnie Brown can stay healthy yet they drafted a underachieving Big Ten quarterback instead of adding weapons to your offense or improving your secondary? I hope that Chad Henne is as special of a player as the Dolphins front office believe he is otherwise they may have just mortgaged their future.
