Ultimate Frisbee

This is a document about the popular and rapidly growing sport of ultimate Frisbee.

There were many similarities and differences between the rules of the game that we played in class, and the way that it is played by other people. One example would be the foul. In class, we did not talk about any fouls that would be committed on the field, but in the real way it is played, there are. A foul occurs when a person gets too close to an opposing player and created contact. Usually the play just continues with the fouling team giving up the Frisbee to the other team. One similarity between the real game and our game was that there are no referees in the game. Instead, players are supposed to work out the problems with the other team and make their own calls.

There may have been a difference in the sizes of the fields between the ones that we played on in class, and the sizes that are official. The official size of the field is 70 feet by 40 feet with end zones that extend 25 feet out. Our field had the same proportions of field sizes to the official fields, but I am not sure if the measurements are equal.

There are also some similarities and differences between the strategies that are used to play the game. When we played it, we just tried to do whatever possible to score quickly, because of the little time that we had to play. In the official game, they play to a score of 15 and usually take up to 2 hours to complete the game. This means that they can take small passes to each other and pass backwards. The official game also allows you to hold onto the Frisbee for up to 10 seconds, while we could only hold onto it for about 5. In the official game, people could also substitute for other players after scores, while we didn't have any substitutions at all.

In the websites, they mentioned some fundamentals that could be used when throwing and catching a Frisbee. When catching the Frisbee, people should try to create a sort of net in their hands to catch the Frisbee without dropping it. When throwing, you should try to throw it in a parallel path to the ground and make sure that its spins a lot to get a good distance.

I enjoyed ultimate Frisbee very much, because it was a very competitive sport that also had a lot to do with physical fitness. It trained arm strength when I would throw it and increased my aerobic capacity when I would have to run to either defend or to receive the Frisbee from a friend. I really enjoyed doing this activity and I hope that we will be able to do it for at least a few more classes.
