Had he not been deterred with the, Indian, captain title Ganguly would have been next only to Sachin in terms of all cricket records. He was almost par in terms of the number of ODI centuries with Tendulkar before he took up his captaincy.

Though the captaincy took a toll on his sublime batting form, his acheivement as a captain is in terms of marvels.

I find this very funny. We are comparing someone who is past his prime against someone who has started his career just 4 years back. I am sure the same people criticizing Dhoni praised him sky high when he scored that 183 in India. Do we remember how he played till earlier thois year by rotating strike rather than hitting every ball he was famous for? Does anyone remember how he got India to with the 20/20 World Cup by remaining calm! Does anyone for that matter remember how he boldly got a new young team for 20/20 and then got them to perform with no experience? Who are we comparing with whom? When Saurav took over the team was talented but not a good unit. He brought th eunit together but then also saw to it that he remained in the limelight. How can we forget how he controlled Indian cricket along with Dalmiya. When Dhoni took over he put together a raw team to win the World Cup . Luck does matter but so does talent. LAST LETS REMEMBER WHO SUGGESTED DHONI TO BE ELEVATED TO A CAPTAIN. SACHIN HIMSELF!! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?Dhoni has the team behind him and he has the respect of th eseniors as well...In all this makes him a man to watch and if he keeps his head cool he will definitely be the most successful captain ever.....When he has a 8-1 field for this match everyone cribbed in foreign media about defensive tactics. But What did Ponting say about that? India played to their plan and the tactics won them the match . Dhoni's is intelligent, and very cool. He is not so talented as Ganguly as a batsman but he's ranked as number 1 batsman in ODI currently. Proves what a brain he has. His application is brilliant. Ganguly was the best captain of India but I think Dhoni will be better than the Best. Hats of to Ganguly. And cheers to Dhoni.

i am not saying ganguly was a bad captain...but i feel dhoni is a 100 times better captain and also a better batsmen than ganguly....i can say this a 1000 times....ganguly is a flop when wickets are tumbling at the other end...on the other hand dhoni is a batsmen who is a hit most of the time in such situations..one example is the second innings of nagpur test...

You cant compare Ganguly to Dhoni. Ganguly got passion, aggression into the indian team which had never been there before. He groomed and supported the players and gave them confidence. He made the indian team a self confident, self believing team.

Dhoni is taking the team to the next level. The times are different, the players have that confidence given to them by ganguly so they are performing better. It was time for Ganguly to go, its good that he made his exit so elegantly unlike Kapil/Azhar.
Dhoni is a very strong thinking captain who never looses his cool even in tight situations. Every series he has lead the team as caption, india has done better than ever before. You have to give this to him.

Ganguly was a great captain of India and he served Indian cricket as its most successful captain for half a decade.... Dhoni has just completed a year of captaincy and has a loooong way to go.... He'll face tougher challenges and how he fares then will decide the result of this debate.... I really could not imagine myself talking anything bad about any Indian especially when duo have represented Indian most loving game of Cricket in the world. I think both of them are extraordinary in many ways. Everybody has a good time and a bad time in one's life but it is not a good way to compare bad time of one person with good time of others. Both of them have done fabulous decisions at times that has won them matches. Both of them have spirited their teams to score a win. Both of them have hard times somewhere. I personally didn't like Dada but his in time decision to quit with due respect has won my regards. Now I have learned to judge person from his contribution as a team member; be by playing when needed or quitting at right time.

We can not compare past with future...if you relly want to compare then it should be after dhoni\'s retirement

I do not see any point in comparing the two captains. One of them had lead India successfully to become a strong force pulling out of a turbulent stage when Match fixing allegations were looming large in cricketing world. He has formed one of the most successful opening stands in world along with Sachin. Whereas when we see Dhoni, he came from no where and within a very short span of time, emerged as a true leader of the team. The winning habit which dada has inculcated in out team, the same spirit is being carried out by MSD and team. I will say that Indian cricket team is in safe hands now and I wish all the best to MSD to continue taking the Indian cricket to greater heights.
I agree that it has been unfortunate with the way Sourabh Ganguly has to announce his retirement. He still had a good amount of cricket left in him, considering the batting form he was in. However, he himself admitted that considering the fact that Indian cricket team need to be built for 2011, him occupying a place in the team (specially at the mercy of the selectors) will not be worthy for Sourabh. Sourabh has been our hero and will remain so forever and MSD will carry ahead the perfect balance of agressiveness, composure and tactical attitude within the Indian Team.
So, guys please stop comaring one of the cricketing legend with another of our hero, who is on the path to become another legendary cricketer for India.

Please please dont compare Dhoni with Ganguli. Ganguli is a seasoned and mature. He has the different qualities. He has changed the thinking of selectors as well as critics. He was a master player with the qualities of leading from the front.
But Dhoni is a young boy of 7 months (imaginary) he is trying to stood on his foot. And i think his efforts are fine. Listen this is a team game. No one can achieve alone. and Dhoni is doing very well. If he will retain the captancy only 4 year (just half of the Ganguly\'s tenure) you will see how friendly he is.

Ganguly has only records with him other than that he is really one of worst player in the cricket. I dont know how many of them will accept this comment, Eventhough our bcci knows about him.
He have 10,000 runs on his back but wat about fielding guys tell me, where you will make him to stand in the ground for fielding, So only our bcci making him to stand out the boundary rope.
