How to Tie a Figure Eight Knot for Sailing

Sailors need to know a lot of different knots, the figure eight is one of these need to know knots.

The figure eight knot is used equally in sailing and rock climbing. The knot is used at the end of a rope to stop them from running through or out of the retaining device. The figure eight knot is aptly named because it looks like a figure eight, when tied.

Starting with the end of your rope, create a loop with the tail end of the rope about three to four inches in length.

Taking the tail end, cross over the top of the other side of the loop.

Once over the top of the rope, take the tail end of the rope under the other side of the rope. This will appear as the rope has wrapped around it's self.

Place the tail end of the rope through the loop. You can leave this loose or pull it tight. The shape of the knot should appear to be a figure eight.
