The Redeem Team Better Than the Dream Team?

I can remember watching the Dream Team back when I was a kid. Watching Jordan, Sir Charles, Ewing, Magic, Bird, Clyde "The Glyde," and The Admiral dominate the competition was amazing. But I can't help but feeling, as blasphemous as this may sound, that they weren't as complete or dominant as this year's Redeem Team.

Back then the competition from abroad wasn't even close to being as substantial as it is now. Those players on the Dream Team were easily the greatest players in the world at the time. There was no country that could match the talent and experience of the Dream Team. Times have changed since then and European leagues have become much stronger and also much more popular.

The Dream Team probably even had a hand in the growth of other leagues and the talent of players from other countries. They turned the world on to the game of basketball and how perfect and wonderful it can be. Instead of idolizing soccer greats, the could be like millions of other kids in America who were pretending to be Michael Jordan or Isaiah Thomas, counting down seconds on an imaginary shot clock. The Dream Team inspired a generation of kids who grew up playing basketball and are now their own country's star athletes.

When the Dream Team first played in 1992, Ricky Rubio - the 17 year old phenom for Spain - was not yet 2. There is no question that 16 years ago there would be someone so young and so talented. The number of foreign representation in the NBA is staggering compared to that in 1992. From just the 00-01 season to the 05-06 season, the numbers changed drastically. In 00-01 the NBA was 89.9% American, whereas in 05-06 that number dipped to just 81.1%. With players from over 65 countries, the basketball contingent from outside the US is growing and catching up fast.

So the question is, was the Redeem Team better than the Dream Team? Obviously it's a subjective question that is all pure speculation, but I believe that this year's team was better than the one in 1992. Am I saying that the Redeem Team was better then the Dream Team? No. Maybe. Probably. I don't know. But what I am saying is that in a field of competition that has only gotten better, stronger, faster and hungrier - the Redeem Team was just as dominant as the Dream Team. Which, logically, would lead me to surmise that this year's team is, in theory, better.

This is simply incorrect. Your assessment that the competition has gotten \"better, stronger, faster and hungrier\" is also subjective. While I think its fair to say other countries are better now than they were in the Dream Team era, it is just as subjective to debate someone\'s level of hunger.

When you look at the numbers (dream team vs redeem team) the dream team wins whether it be ppg, opp ppg, rebounds per game, 3pt% opp 3pt%, etc. I think what ultimately make the Dream Team better was the fear and respect other countries had for them. After Barkley cold cocked that Angolan basketball player in 1992, the whole team actually asked for autographs and requested that the US players posed for pictures with them. This is unfathomable now.

Truth be told, the Dream Team was simply hard (in an OG sorta way). The Redeem Team, with some notable exceptions (Lebron, Kobe, Wade) does not have the same killer instinct that 92 team possessed. Every player on the 92 team possessed the ability to will them to a victory if need be - This 08 team has exceptional talent, but were often unable to play and function with the same kind of synchronization of the 92 squad. Not to mention that the 92 squad (mullin, stockton, bird, pippen, jordan, etc) could shoot the lights out - this 08 just cant shoot that well (redd - and he didnt really play).

Most of this is a product of maturity. Could the 08 grow to eventually be better than the 92 team - sure I think so. But at face value are they better? I wouldnt bet on it.

Obviously much of this is hearsay. There is no way to ever know who would be better. There is no question that the 92 team was much "harder" than the 08 team. But that's because the game has changed. Back then it was okay to punch people. It was okay for Bill Laimbeer to literally punch someone in the face. Today an act like that will get you suspended for at least 25 games as opposed to a technical foul.

I also agree that the 92 team had better shooters, but if you look at the game, the way it's played today, there is no one on the 08 team who would have a problem guarding a shooter from the 92 team. Players today are faster and the game has evolved to less of a shooting game and more of an attacking game. As far as killer instinct goes, I again would give the edge to the 92 team simply because the way we remember those guys is a group of tough hard guys who would knock you out. But again, the game has changed. You can't get that emotional about it or you end up like Ron Artest with a 70 game suspension. There are only a few guys today that can get that emotional and carnal on the court without taking it to a physical level, and Kobe, Lebron and CP III are a few of them.

It's a tough call and while I wouldn't doubt a Dream Team win, if playing by today's rules, I'd say the Redeem Team takes it.

I agree that the game is much softer now than it once was (and its a damn shame). That being said, simply being able to \"Debo\" people wasnt what made the 92 team so good.

The 08 team would not be able to guard the 92 team\'s shooters. They could barely guard the European team\'s shooters. What enabled the 92 team to have such a high shooting percentage was not just their skill level but their ability to execute plays and be so disciplined in implementation of their game plan from start to finish.

Today\'s game is less of a shooting game only because their are less quality shooters. Most scouts complain that the skill most lacking among skill players especially is the ability to shoot the basketball consistently. \"Scorers\" are great and exciting, but what will keep Lebron from being the greatest player ever is if he fails to develop a true jump shot (his is good, but he\'s not a \"shooter\" yet, still a scorer). As far as the ability of players to attack better - good defense cant stop everything, but it does what the Pistons did in 04...slows the game down and makes the offense be nearly flawless in order to score. The 92 team not only had great defense but understood the basic principles of defense and just as importantly were committed to them each game.

I just see this 08 team as being less-than-ripe. Not that they aren\'t extremely talented, but more like they are just the hottest chick to come along after dating some real disappointments. I felt through almost the whole tournament they were still somewhat adjusting to having other great players around them instead of playing as a team of great players.
