The Cromwell Suns basketball team were forced to play their scheduled friendly match against the Cromwell College Boys "A" team with only 5 players. Nick Scott and Nathan Roberts both announced their unavailability for the match in the days before, leaving the Suns with only 5 men.
The game started casually for the Suns as they let the younger, faster College team get out to a lead before finding their nouse and hitting some wide open shots. In a scenario that completely contradicted the way the Suns have played this season, outside shots were going down from all corners with Cole Chamberlain hitting a pair early on.
At the half the Suns had rolled out to a lead of 8 points thanks to their solid defence which has been a feature of their play all season. There were some low points though as rebounds were hard to come by, namely offensive boards, and a few too many turnovers.
The second half saw the College team come out a lot more physical and with the Suns growing more and more tired as the game wore on; they chipped away at the lead and eventually surpassed the Suns to lead by 5 with about a minute to go. Andy Ritchie pulled the Suns closer with a sharp move to the basket resulting in an easy lay-up, and then a long offensive board and a step back from Rhys Chamberlain to hit a clutch 3 in the corner with 30 seconds left, tied the scores. The game ended at 53 a piece and a sombre feeling afterward.
As a whole the team played well with Jonny Roberts and Andy Ritchie carrying on their hot form, Cole Chamberlain and new signing Mickey Ritchie proving strong, and Rhys Chamberlain finally finding his shooting touch 3 games into the season. It was an all round good night for the Suns and a booster for the team's confidence especially on offence.
- Rhys Chamberlain 17 points
- Andy Ritchie 13 points
