I do not know if there are such choices in football, basketball or other sports, but it seems to me that this array of choices in baseball must be very expensive and for those who are just fair players but who are passionate, it must assure these passionate players a place to ply their wares, even if only for one season.

NO ball player plays at this best every day.
NO pro ball player lives without hype.
In the stands, the top players look like the poorest players, thus, there is nothing to make the top guys stand out! A top quality player hits the ball once out of 3 times at bat! Sixty six percent of the time, he strikes out-like the worst player!
I grew up admiring Willie Mays, the Say Hey Kid, and Duke Snyder from the
LA Dodgers team.
I never saw them off the ball fields and when playing, they were identical in actions to all the rest
of the players!
Some of these players earn millions of dollars. I do agree that some of them have
gained greater refinements in their game then their counterparts have.
Why aren't poor sports players replaced by others who do better? And what is “better?” In sports, it is all numbers; hits, home runs, innings pitched and games saved.
7 levels of baseball. YOU would think that everyone could hit 400 by the time they reach the majors!
