Disappointment. It is something that is said in the baseball world that describes teams that had high expectations going into the season only to be faltering big time. Though the season may be early, it could become a major indication of what the team's future is going to the end of the season. Nearly 1/3 of the season has been completed and we have seen some surprise teams as well as disappointments. I'm going to look at some teams that have earned the title of disappointment. It won't be in any particular order.
Cleveland Indians:
Probably considered the redheaded stepchild of the entire league. There are some people within the media that pretty much makes this team seem like one of the most hated clubs and least respected. This team went from World Series contender to now a slump team that can't hit at all. At this very moment, the Indians have been such a cold streak; it would make the North Pole seem warm. The pitching for the most part outside of the bullpen has been sharp but it sure seems like the Indians offense has some strange obsession with scoring 3 runs or less. The team is currently 6-22 when that happens and has the worst hitting in the American League. The only real change that happened to the Tribe this year would be the field would be changed from Jacob's Field to Progressive Field. Is that a bad omen or a mere coincidence? Who knows for sure but does make you wonder if that name change jinxed them.
New York Mets:
One of the single most overhyped teams going into the season. Getting Johan Santana was supposed to be the ticket to the World Series and guess what. That hasn't happened. So what is causing this team to not look so well? It has to do with management perhaps not making the right moves. On paper, it looked in some people's eyes that the Mets were going to instantly become the unstoppable team in the National League to go all the way and possibly win it. This looks familiar, as I believe this team was overhyped 6 years ago making major moves and not working out.
Detroit Tigers:
Another team that got hyped to the max and was automatically given the division and possibly a birth in the World Series. Much like the Indians, the Tigers have been horrific and embarrassing to watch. While the pitching is worse than Cleveland's and the offense is better, it doesn't excuse anything at all.
Colorado Rockies:
The defending National League Champions sure aren't playing like they made it. The team is just playing horribly and there's just no getting around it. Some teams are easier to explain than others and this one just is mind-boggling. After what it looked like they threw the World Series and didn't put forth an effort of being somewhat competitive, it sure seems to have caught up to them. Colorado isn't hitting nor is it pitching. If the Rockies are going to make somewhat of a turn around, they better start doing both otherwise it will be considered a major disappointment.
New York Yankees:
The only disappointing moment is being last but this may not be a huge one to be honest. The New York Yankees in the last few years have had a track record of being poor early in the season and then start playing well in the later months. It is almost as if the team intentionally plays bad during the first few months leading teams into a false sense of security. If the New York Yankees aren't competing by August and are so far out of the playoff race it's not even funny, then it will be a monumental upset and perhaps then there probably will be more headlines of how the Yankees failed to make the playoffs instead of the actual playoffs being covered.
Seattle Mariners:
A team that was supposed to contend for a division and maybe even a playoff spot and that's not even happening. No words can describe other than being blown out of the water and not hitting or pitching. This team is pretty much finished and not going to be a true contender.
The season may be early but as stated before, you have your disappointments and there simply is no getting around it. These teams to me are the biggest failures at this moment. Can it change during the season? Of course it can but will it is another story.
